RDI Pattern

Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) is a distinction, awarded by the The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) for »sustained excellence in aesthetic and efficient design for industry« to creatives from various fields – graphics, illustration, product design, engineering, theatre, environmental design, fashion.

The RSA commissioned a pattern for the end paper of their RDI guest book. Even though it looks like a repeating pattern, all the elements are unique. It is a non-repeating repeating pattern, made from 16 geometric forms, including the shape of the RDI logo, that are combined to create 256 unique tiles. Inverting the fill colour doubles the number. Adding a spot colour and the letters R, D and I, increases the number of available elements further.

Designed in collaboration with George Hardie and Mike Dempsey.
